Analysis Shows Flame Retardants Are Important to Home Fire Safety

In this video from the American Chemistry Council's YouTube channel, Matt Blais, Ph.D., explains his recent independent analysis, drawn from a National Institute of Justice arson study, that speaks to the difference flame retardants make when they are used in household furniture. Dr. Blais is a the Director of Fire Technology at Southwest Research Institute and a technical advisor to the North American Flame Retardant Alliance.

Asteroid 2012 DA14 to Whiz Past Earth Safely

The small near-Earth asteroid 2012 DA14 will pass very close to Earth on Feb. 15, 2013. It will be so close that it will pass inside the ring of geosynchronous weather and communications satellites. Asteroid 2012 DA14 will be closest to Earth at about 11:24 a.m. PST (2:24 p.m. EST and 1924 UTC) on Feb. 15, when it will be at a distance of about 27,700 kilometers (17,200 miles) above Earth's surface. NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office can accurately predict the asteroid's path with the observations obtained, and it is therefore known that there is no chance that the asteroid might be on a collision course with Earth. Nevertheless, the flyby will provide a unique opportunity for researchers to study a near-Earth object up close. This NASA video includes an interview with Donald K. Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Safety Is a Choice: DuPont James River Site

The DuPont James River site was awarded the first annual E.I. du Pont Safety Excellence Medal in recognition of the interdependent workplace safety culture that has allowed them to work 30 years without an event-related lost workday injury. In this short video James River employees share, in their own words, why they make safety a choice.

The PowerHaul Locomotive (Some Assembly Required)

The 1,300 individual pieces of the GE PowerHaul Locomotive are manufactured in Erie, PA and then shipped more than 5,000 miles to Eskişehir, Turkey. Once they arrive in Turkey, the train is assembled over several weeks, until a beautiful locomotive with a lightweight design and more than 3,700 horsepower emerges ready to ride the rails. Turkey is in the process of revolutionizing its railway system and hopes to increase its rail capacity by more than 60 percent in the coming years. Tülomsaş, the Turkish manufacturer, is responsible for the local assembly of GE's PowerHaul and is creating a train capable of hauling loads of up to 3,600 tons while using technology that reduces required fuel use by up to 9 percent. General Electric's partnership with this Turkish manufacturer unites fuel efficient rail technology with European markets and showcases a marvel of transportation made by Americans and Turks alike.

Bath Salts: It's not a fad... It's a Nightmare

Bath salts are a non-regulated designer drug comprised of a synthetic cathinone, or amphetamine, that can have dangerous and debilitating effects on those who use them. The adverse health effects from bath salt use can range from agitation to lack of appetite, kidney failure, muscle spasms, severe paranoid delusions, and psychosis. Deadly Contract

This U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board video is based on its investigation of the April 8, 2011, explosion and fire that killed five workers at a storage facility used by Donaldson Enterprises near Honolulu, Hawaii. The explosion occurred during the disposal of professional-grade fireworks that had been illegally labeled for consumer use by a Chinese manufacturer and were seized by federal customs agents upon arrival in the United States. The board posted the video Jan. 17, 2012, in conjunction with a public meeting to address the investigative staff's findings about the incident. Friction or a spark probably ignited black powder the workers had removed from the seized fireworks.

BP Alaska: UAV Pilot Testing

In Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, BP conducted pilot testing of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology to enhance pipeline inspection and safety. Equipped with high-resolution cameras, the Aeryon Scout provides visual inspections of equipment, helping crews assess and respond to maintenance needs. The small rotor-wing aircraft is flown from a hand-held tablet computer. BP Alaska conducted the trials in cooperation with the University of Alaska Fairbanks in fall 2012.
