During a Capitol Hill hearing May 8 on the opioid epidemic's implications for the Federal Employees' Compensation Act, one witness said the program must build an approach that includes random screening for all patients who are prescribed opioids.
"This committee is finally forcing Congress to treat the pension crisis in this country with the seriousness and urgency American workers deserve. Hearing directly from workers, retirees, and businesses about what is at stake for them will help the committee craft the best possible solution," Sen. Sherrod Brown said.
The department's three model earned sick and safe leave policies cover employers awarding earned leave at the beginning of the year, employers allowing leave to accrue throughout the year, and a policy for tipped employees in the restaurant industry.
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters' National Negotiating Committee submitted to UPS an 83-page document updating the prior agreement. The crackdown has identified about $1.2 million owed to nearly 400 workers, the New York State Department of Labor and Gov. Cuomo announced. The minimum wage will be $10.50 an hour for employers with 25 or fewer workers and $11 an hour for employers with 26 or more. And the rates keep rising until 2023. Other new laws taking effect on Jan. 1 in the state affect agricultural workers' sexual harassment training and CalEPA oversight of refineries' safety.
Gov. Larry Hogan this week unveiled the Paid Leave Compromise Act of 2018, saying it will be filed as emergency legislation and be ready on the first day of the legislative session starting in January. He vetoed HB1, the paid leave bill passed by the General Assembly, in May 2017.

The authors of the paper published in the journal Human Factors -- human factors/ergonomics researchers -- evaluated whether casual video game play is an effective way to combat workplace stress during breaks.

The bureau was created by Public Law No. 259 on June 5, 1920, which gave the bureau the duty to "formulate standards and policies which shall promote the welfare of wage-earning women, improve their working conditions, increase their efficiency, and advance their opportunities for profitable employment."
Comparing opioid use for workers injured in 2010 and 2013 over an average two-year period following the injury, the study found reductions in the average amount of opioids dispensed to injured workers in several states, with larger reductions seen in Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, and New York.
House Bill 2010 encourages schools to include workplace safety training and information in the curriculum of appropriate courses.
