North Carolina Mine and Quarry Injury Rate Falls to Historic Low

New statewide data shows mine and quarry injuries dropping to a record 0.82 rate, reflecting strong safety training efforts and industry-wide commitment to prevention.

Labor Commissioner Luke Farley and the North Carolina Department of Labor’s Mine and Quarry Bureau announced today that the state’s injury rate for mine and quarry workers has reached a historic low of 0.82. This marks a significant improvement from 1.08 in 2024 and 0.97 in 2023, and it remains well below the current national average of 0.97.

Commissioner Farley praised the Bureau’s ongoing commitment to workplace safety and training.

Our Mine and Quarry Bureau continue to lead the way in ensuring North Carolina miners go home safely every day,” said Farley. “Through their dedication to direct training, technical assistance, and on-site consultations, they’re making our state a national model for mine safety.”

During the most recent fiscal year, the Bureau trained or consulted with a total of 4,574 miners and contractors statewide. This includes direct training for 1,701 miners and 1,937 contractors, as well as consultations or other assistance provided to 649 miners and 287 contractors.

Currently, there are 243 active or intermittent mine sites operating in North Carolina. The Bureau works closely with mining companies and contractors across the state to reduce injuries and promote safety awareness through direct training, technical assistance, on-site consultations, and first aid/CPR instruction.

These numbers reflect more than just statistics — they represent lives and livelihoods protected through education, prevention, and partnership,” Farley added. “Much of this success is due to the professionalism and commitment of North Carolina miners and contract miners, who continue to uphold the highest safety standards in their daily work.”
