NSC Appoints Anas Al-Hamwi as Board Chair, Welcomes Five New Members

The National Safety Council announced new leadership during its 2025 Safety Congress & Expo in Denver, naming Al-Hamwi chair and adding five industry leaders to its board.

The National Safety Council has appointed Anas Al-Hamwi as chair of its board of directors and welcomed five new members during its annual board meeting at the 2025 NSC Safety Congress & Expo in Denver.

Al-Hamwi, a board member since 2017, serves as regional vice president for Walgreens Retail USA, where he leads health, safety and injury management. He was a founding member of the Walgreens Boots Alliance Health, Safety and Environmental Governance Committee and has advanced safety culture through initiatives including an enhanced OSHA response system and an Active Care model that reduced workplace injuries for three consecutive years.

The Council also announced the addition of five new board members:

  • Brian Callahan, CEO and president of ISN and current chair of the NSC Campbell Institute. He previously worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and Koch Industries and served as an officer in the U.S. Army.

  • Darryl Hill, who brings more than 35 years of experience in safety, health and environmental management. Hill most recently served as senior vice president of safety & security at First Student, Inc. and has been recognized with both the NSC Distinguished Service to Safety Award and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals Lifetime Achievement Award.

  • Travis Parsons, director of occupational safety & health for the Laborers’ Health & Safety Fund of North America. With more than 25 years of experience, Parsons is also vice president of the Labor Division at NSC and vice chair of the ANSI/ASSP A10 Standards Committee. He has received the NSC Distinguished Service to Safety Award.

  • Robert Rudge, Jr., senior vice president and chief safety and security officer at U.S. Steel. Rudge oversees corporate safety, industrial hygiene, security, and the company’s aircraft division, following a 25-year career as a special agent with the FBI.

  • Nicholas Smith, president of NSC. Smith joined the organization in 2017 as chief operations officer and later added the title of chief strategy officer before becoming president, where he leads NSC’s mission to reduce injuries and fatalities in the workplace and on roadways.
