Operation Lifesaver Announces $190,000 in Rail Transit Safety Education Grants

Applications for competitive grants focused on rail transit safety education and public awareness initiatives are open until September 1, 2024.

Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI)—a national nonprofit dedicated to rail safety education—has announced it is accepting applications for its Rail Transit Safety Education Grants. This year, $190,000 in funding is available for transit agencies and government entities to promote rail safety through educational and public awareness campaigns.

“These Rail Transit Safety Education Grants empower transit agencies nationwide to promote rail safety education in their communities," OLI Executive Director Rachel Maleh said in a statement. “I urge all transit agencies to consider applying. We are grateful to the Federal Transit Administration for the agency’s continuing support that helps make these grants, as well as our ongoing rail safety education and outreach efforts, possible.”

Grants are capped at $20,000 per project and require non-federal matching funds covering at least 25 percent of the project costs. Eligible projects must focus on safety education or public awareness initiatives in communities with existing or planned rail transit systems, including commuter rail, light rail, subway and streetcar services. All materials produced with grant funds must be approved by OLI and coordinated with state Operation Lifesaver programs.

Applications must be submitted through the Common Grant Application online program by September 1, 2024. Successful applicants will be notified by October 15, 2024. For more information on application requirements and guidelines, visit OLI's website.
