NSC Receives Nearly $1 Million in Federal Grants for Employer Traffic Safety

The funding will expand the Our Driving Concern program in three states.

The National Safety Council (NSC) was just awarded over $900,000 in federal grants to expand its employer traffic safety program, Our Driving Concern (ODC). ODC works to boost awareness of the impact traffic crashes have on employers and help companies create a safer environment on the road.

According to a recent release, the funding comes from three federal pass-through grants aiming to reduce workplace transportation incidents. All three programs awarding the grants—the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Ohio Department of Public Safety and Louisiana Highway Safety Commission—are funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“We are honored to receive these three federal pass-through grants,” NSC’s Executive VP of Roadway Practice Mark Chung said in a statement. “State and federal funds like this enhance the Council’s work with government partners to contribute to a reduction in crashes, serious injuries and fatalities. With occupational transportation incidents accounting for nearly 40 percent of all workplace deaths, it cannot be overstated how important the expansion of this program is.”

TxDOT provided NSC with $711,420 earmarked to provide free training and resources to mitigate risky driving and boost safety. Ohio’s award of $157,156 will create an Employer Traffic Safety Program accounting for the highest traffic crash risks in the state, such as seat belt use, speeding and distraction. The $80,000 grant for Louisiana, meanwhile, will address impaired driving through evidence-based training, tools and educational resources for employers.
