NIOSH Opens Submissions for Safe in Sound Excellence in Hearing Loss Prevention Awards

The deadline to submit nominations is June 8 if nominating an “individual, group, or company,” and August 18 if nominating yourself.

Thousands of workers lose their hearing every year, a sad reality that can be avoided.

While hearing loss illnesses decreased from 2009 to 2019, 14,500 workers still lost their hearing to work-related hazards in 2019, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

But some people, employers or companies are taking action to reduce hearing loss. Since 2007, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been recognizing these organizations with Safe-in-Sound Excellence in Hearing Loss Prevention Awards, and this year is no different.

Just last week, NIOSH announced in a news release that it is now accepting nominations for its annual award, which has two categories: excellence and innovation.

The excellence award is for “those who go out of their way to ensure safety of employees’ hearing by limiting or eliminating risks from noise exposure in their workplace;” and the innovation award “recognizes individuals or organizations for their dedication to fostering and implementing unique advances in the prevention of hearing loss and creating innovative solutions to real workplace hearing loss prevention challenges.”

There are two deadlines for submissions this year: June 8, 2023, if nominating an “individual, group, or company,” and August 18, 2023, if nominating yourself.

Awards will be issued at the Annual National Hearing Conference in February 2024.
