Dollar Tree Inc. Hit with More Citations, Proposed Penalties of $254K

Inspectors found obstructed exit routes and unsafely stacked boxes at a store in Texas.

Many of the violations found at Dollar Tree locations across the U.S. have been similar in nature, and some of those identified at a Texas store are no exception.

Following an inspection at a Dollar Tree store in Mount Pleasant, Texas—about 120 miles east of Dallas—Dollar Tree Inc. was cited after obstructed exit routes, unsafely stacked boxes and unclean areas were found in the store, according to a news release.

OSHA issued citations for three repeat violations and proposed penalties of $254,478.

Unsafely stacked boxes or items have been found by state OSHA programs and federal OSHA in at least five stores in the last year; obstructed exit routes were found in at least two locations.

"In the event of an emergency, workers and others must have fast and safe access to unblocked exit routes," said OSHA Regional Administrator Eric S. Harbin in Dallas in the news release. "Retailers like Dollar Tree that fail to make sure their stores' storage areas are organized and safe are endangering everyone who works and shops there."

There are more than 16,000 Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores, both run by Dollar Tree Inc., across 48 states. In total, more than 193,000 people are employed by the discount retailer.
