NFPA 70E — 2021: What's New for PPE

In this episode, Editor Sydny Shepard sits down with Scott Francis, Technical Sales Manager for Westex: A Milliken Brand, to discuss new additions and clarifications in the latest edition of NFPA 70E.

The number of people working around electricity or electrical equipment each and every day is nearly too many too count. Because of these, there are numerous incidents that lead to injuries or even fatalities each year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2019 had the most recorded fatal electrical injuries since 2011, a 3.75 percent increase over 2018.

In order to give employers and workers a “how to guide” on navigating electrical safety hazards, the National Fire Protection Association has published the 2021 edition of NFPA 70E—it’s standard for electrical safety in the workplace. This new edition, published last fall, features many changes, so I thought it best to bring on an old friend of the podcast: Scott Francis, Technical Sales Manager at Westex: A Milliken Brand, to talk us through some of the most significant additions and clarifications.

But first, let’s talk a little more about our guest for today’s episode: Scott Francis graduated from Augustana College and the University of Iowa with a M.S. in Inorganic Chemistry. Since 1991, Scott has been involved in the Safety Industry, gaining extensive experience with the performance of protective apparel fabrics and protective apparel programs. Scott has participated in a number of industry organizations, including Edison Electric Institute, National Safety Council-Utilities Division and the Pulp and Paper Safety Association. He frequently addresses trade associations and groups regarding electric arc and flash fire hazards, prevention of body burn injury, the protective performance of flame-resistant fabrics and related topics.

So, what are the most significant changes to NFPA 70E and how can it help employers better protect their workers? Listen to the episode to find out! Download or stream this episode today at Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify and more
