Target Corp. Enters Settlement Agreement with OSHA

The retail company will pay $464,750 in penalties for storage hazards and safety violations in stores.

OSHA announced a region wide corporate settlement agreement with Target Corp. on October 19 to correct issues concerning exit access, storage hazards and worker safety at about 200 stores.

Eight Target locations in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York were cited by OSHA between May and December 2019 for blocked emergency and fire exits and unsafe storage of materials in backrooms. After initially contesting the citations, Target Corp. will pay $464,750 in the settlement.

The company also agreed to enhance its safety programs over the course of the next two years.

“Under this agreement, Target Corporation is taking steps to proactively address and prevent two of the major safety hazards in the retail industry and maintain safe working conditions for its employees,” said Richard Mendelson, OSHA Regional Administrator in New York.

Target has committed to retrain all affected employees on issues covered by the settlement, permit OSHA access to stores to verify compliance with the settlement agreement, as well as have outside managers visit each cited store at least twice a year to monitor progress.
