Arizona Fire Department Utilizes Drones to Ensure Safety of Firefighters

Scottsdale’s fire department enrolled 14 firefighters into a drone-pilot program to make their missions safer and more efficient.

The Scottsdale Fire Department in Arizona has integrated drone technology into its rescue missions to advance firefighter safety, according to The Arizona Republic.

The department began using drones about a month ago, though the program didn’t officially launch until October 15. Since its inception, drones have been used six times to help with structure fires.

“We’re going to start using them on most of the calls that we have,” said Capt. Dave Folio. “If we can get there quick enough to put a drone up for the safety of our crews to get a quick 360, we will.”

The drones will be used to reduce wait time on missions. They are able to fly up to 400 feet and can attach water bottles, life vests and flashlights to the camera to aid in the rescue and recovery process.
