The American Society of Concrete Contractors Awards the Best in the Industry
On September 19, the American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC) recognized concrete contractors with exemplary safety records for the previous year.
Last month, at the Safety & Risk Management Council (SRMC) of the ASCC, a handful of awards were given to companies and contractors in the concrete business for outstanding records and safety systems. The SRMC is part of the association’s Annual Conference, and it was held in Chicago, IL this year.
A number of awards were given out this year. The W. Burr Bennett Awards for Safety Excellence was awarded to specialty contractor Largo Concrete, Inc., from Tustin, CA and general contractor DPR Construction from Newport Beach, CA. These awards are presented in partnership with CNA, Chicago, to contractors that place the highest priority on safety. Entries are assessed on three years of safety performance indicators, values, and trends; a self-assessment checklist of company safety practices; and detailed descriptions of safety plans and culture.
Additional awards at the Conference were based on the incident rate for 2018 and were presented in four categories.
Many companies reported either lowered incident rates or none at all for the previous year. Forty-one contractors received awards for zero lost time due to accidents. Thirty-nine contractors were recognized for having lowered their incident rate. Fifty-eight contractors received certificates for achieving an incident rate below the national average.
Among those who received the Outstanding Safety Achievement Award were general and specialty contractors. General contractor recipients for the lowest incident rate were DPR Construction (Southwest Region) from Newport Beach, CA; Korte Construction Co. from Highland, IL; and Briegan Concrete Constructors from Clayton, NC. Specialty contractor recipients of the award were TAS Commercial Concrete Systems from Houston, TX; Trademark Concrete Systems from Camarillo, CA; and Buesser Concrete from Eau Claire, WI.
Three companies were also awarded for outstanding fleet safety records: Precision Concrete Construction from Alpharetta, GA; Groninger Concrete from Colorado Springs, CO; and Wayne Brothers from Davidson, NC.
ASCC Safety & Risk management Council’s goal is to educate contractors on all aspects of safety related to concrete contracting and insurance. General contractors receiving the Outstanding Safety Achievement Award for the lowest incident rate were DPR Construction (Southwest Region) Newport Beach, CA (over 650,000 work hours); Korte Construction Co., Highland, IL (150,000 – 650,000 work hours) and Briegan Concrete Constructors, Clayton, NC(less than 149,999 work hours).
Specialty contractors receiving the Outstanding Safety Achievement Award were TAS Commercial Concrete Systems, Houston, TX (over 400,000 work hours); Trademark Concrete Systems, Camarillo, CA, (100,000 – 399,999 work hours); and Buesser Concrete, Eau Claire, WI (99,999 or less work hours).
Three companies were recognized for outstanding fleet safety records: Precision Concrete Construction, Alpharetta, GA, 260,000 miles with zero accidents; Groninger Concrete, Colorado Springs, CO, 850,000 miles with zero accidents; and Wayne Brothers, Davidson, NC, 2,884,942 miles with zero accidents.
The ASCC Safety & Risk Management Council educates contractors on all aspects of safety relating to concrete contracting and insurance matters. The Council also provides oversight on safety publications and events.
The ASCC is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the capabilities of those who build with concrete, and to providing them a unified voice in the construction industry. Members include concrete contracting firms, manufacturers, suppliers and others interested in the concrete industry such as architects, specifiers and distributors.
