Simulated Explosion Becomes Real-Life Accident: The U.S. Department of Labor Cites Production Company

After two employees were injured on the site of a movie filming, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) is stepping in and enforcing penalties.

While California production group Garden Films Production was filming a simulated motorcycle explosion, two employees were seriously injured as a result. One employee was sent to the hospital and the other suffered minor injuries. Both were not required by Garden Films to wear proper personal protective equipment.

“People on this worksite suffered injuries because the employer failed to implement proper safety practices,” said OSHA Atlanta-East Area Director William Fulcher.

After OSHA inspected the Norcross, Georgia site location, Garden Films was left with a $9,472 fine and fifteen days to comply with the citation, request an informal conference with an OSHA director, or contest the findings before an OSHA commission.

The Department of Labor aims to promote and develop the welfare of wage earners and workers, and OSHA assists by enforcing healthy, safe, and productive work environments for wage earners. The U.S. Department of Labor’s August 12th news release goes into greater detail for this citation case.
