NFPA Hosting San Antonio Active Shooter Event in June

The National Fire Protection Association will host a free active shooter/hostile event program June 18 in San Antonio, in conjunction with its 2019 Conference & Expo, for emergency managers, policymakers, fire, police, EMS, school officials, and facility managers.

The National Fire Protection Association will host a free active shooter/hostile event program June 18 in San Antonio, where the association's 2019 Conference & Expo is taking place June 17-20. The event is for emergency managers, policymakers, fire, police, EMS, school officials, and facility managers.

Attendees will benefit from a half-day public session featuring keynote speaker Michele Gay, co-founder of Safe & Sound Schools; an overview of NFPA 3000, Standard for an Active Shooter/Hostile Event Response Program; and a panel of experts who developed the standard. Attendees also will be granted complimentary access to two active shooter and preparedness educational sessions that are part of the conference & expo at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

"Safety is something we all say we want, but when it comes down to the realities of what it takes to keep people safe, we often turn away because it's uncomfortable, expensive, or may cause us to get into arguments," Gay said. "We need community leaders to work together and our policy makers to champion, endorse, and support collaboration."

NFPA released the standard in May 2018 after receiving a request from an Orange County, Fla. fire chief whose department responded to the Pulse Night Club mass shooting in Orlando. In response, more than 50 representatives from law enforcement, the fire service, EMS, hospitals, emergency management, private security, private business, the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, the Department of Justice, and other disciplines came together to develop the 20-chapter framework.

In addition to the hostile event session, NFPA is conducting a three-hour workshop for up to 70 participants in the afternoon. The fee for the workshop is $250 per person; participants will receive a copy of NFPA 3000. Pre-registration is required for both the free program and the afternoon workshop.
