NIOSH Researcher Named ACS Section's Chemist of the Year

Presented at the section's March 28 meeting at Miami University's Shriver Center in Oxford, Ohio, the award acknowledged Dr. Pramod Kulkarni's work in developing real-time, field-portable instruments that provide information on aerosols in workplace atmospheres.

NIOSH researcher Dr. Pramod Kulkarni has been named Chemist of the Year by the Cincinnati section of the American Chemical Society. Presented at the section's March 28 meeting at Miami University's Shriver Center in Oxford, Ohio, the award acknowledged Kulkarni's work in developing real-time, field-portable instruments that provide information on aerosols in workplace atmospheres.

According to ACS, the Chemist of the Year award is presented in recognition of "outstanding and significant scientific contributions to the field of chemistry or chemical education." The award is presented only to those who are members of the society's Cincinnati section. The award was presented to Kulkarni for his "many outstanding contributions to the science of aerosols, especially the development of instrumental techniques for the quantification and characterization of the aerosols in the industrial environments."

Kulkarni leads the Aerosol Science group in NIOSH's Division of Applied Research and Technology. At the March 28 meeting and award ceremony, he presented a talk titled "Taking laboratory to the field: Developing the next generation of real-time instrumentation for mobile aerosol measurement in workplace atmospheres."

He has co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal publications, eight patents, and five book chapters, according to NIOSH. Kulkarni also is the editor of the journal Aerosol Science and Technology and has edited a widely used book, "Aerosol Measurement: Principles, Techniques, and Applications."
