Skilled Trades Workers Put 25,000 Hours Into API's New Headquarters

"From API's new headquarters in Washington, D.C. to energy infrastructure projects across the nation, the natural gas and oil industry relies on skilled workers and the building trades unions to keep construction projects - from new buildings to energy infrastructure - safe and on schedule," said API President and CEO Mike Sommers.

The American Petroleum Institute and the North America's Building Trades Unions (NABTU) expressed their thanks to the skilled craft tradesmen and women for their hard work on API's new headquarters in Washington, D.C., and highlighted the partnership between the natural gas and oil industry and labor. The new headquarters is located at 200 Massachusetts Ave. Painters, electricians, plumbers, and interior remodelers put in more than 25,000 labor-hours into building this project, their Feb. 14 news release said.

"Together, we ensure that affordable and reliable energy reaches U.S. consumers when they need it and provide job opportunities in our communities, which in turn strengthens local and national economies."

"NABTU's member unions and rank and file members are a critical aspect of many communities, including right here in Washington, D.C. Our role in building API's new headquarters is a shining example of the work that our members do to provide state-of-the-art buildings and infrastructure to make our communities stronger and more viable," said NABTU President Sean McGarvey. "This particular project generated nearly three quarters of a million dollars for our building trade members. Our continued partnership with the energy industry on everything from our recently announced safety training courses to the opportunity for our members to have good-paying jobs to support their families is key to continued U.S. economic growth and jobs for the middle class."

API had announced the plan to move into a new headquarters in October 2017. When that announcement was made, API reported that the new building's green amenities would include cogeneration power, combining heat and power to simultaneously generate heat and electricity; a green roof; centralized recycling; grey water use for landscaping to reduce water use by 50 percent; 70 fuel-efficient vehicle parking spaces; and 440 bike spaces.
