Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cage-Free Eggs Apparently Over, CDC Reports

A total of 44 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella were reported from 11 states this year, with 12 people hospitalized. No deaths were reported.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently posted its final investigation update of the multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to Gravel Ridge Farms' cage-free large eggs: https://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/enteritidis-09-18/index.html. As of Oct. 25, the outbreak appears to be over, according to the agency.

A total of 44 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella were reported from 11 states, with 12 people hospitalized. No deaths were reported. The illnesses started on dates ranging from May 17 to Aug. 26, 2018, and the investigation indicated shell eggs from Gravel Ridge Farms were the likely source of the outbreak.

On Sept. 8, Gravel Ridge Farms recalled cage-free large eggs with use-by dates of July 25 through Oct. 3, 2018, because they may have been contaminated with Salmonella.
