FDA's Budget Contains $5.1 Billion for FY 2017

The funds will help implement the food safety law and improve medical product safety and quality, said Acting Commissioner Dr. Stephen Ostroff, M.D.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's proposed FY2017 budget contains $5.1 billion to protect and promote public health. According to an agency news release, that number is an 8 percent increase over the FY2016 budgeted amount.

Some of the key areas the administration wants to focus on include the continuing implementation of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FMSA) and efforts to improve medical product safety and quality.

"The FDA continues to work to obtain the most public health value for the federal dollar as we address expanded regulatory responsibilities and scientific challenges," said FDA Acting Commissioner Stephen Ostroff, M.D. "The agency remains fully committed to meeting the needs and high expectations of the American people regarding the products we regulate, as well as advancing the prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer."

Other initiatives include supporting the National Cancer Moonshot Initiative and investing in FDA's infrastructure.
