NTSB hosted a symposium last December and may use information gathered from it to develop safety recommendations for reducing tire disablement-related crashes.

NTSB Meeting This Week on Passenger Tire Special Investigation Report

This follows the agency's December 2014 symposium about the causes of tire disablement, the role of recalls and consumer awareness, and advances in tire technology.

The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a meeting Oct. 27 to discuss a special investigation report on selected issues in passenger vehicle tire safety. The report summarizes the agency's investigative efforts on tire-related passenger vehicle crashes and discusses the safety issues uncovered during these investigations and the Dec. 9-10, 2014, NTSB tire symposium.

The symposium brought together experts to discuss why tire disablement occurs, the role of safety recalls and consumer awareness, ongoing safety-related initiatives, and advances in tire technology. The primary focus of the inquiry is on passenger vehicle and light truck tires; NTSB said then that it may use information gathered from the symposium to develop safety recommendations for reducing tire disablement-related crashes.

This week's meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. Eastern time in the NTSB Board Room and Conference Center at 429 L'Enfant Plaza SW in Washington, D.C. A link to a webcast of the meeting will be available here before the start of the meeting.

The time symposium looked at issues including tire registration and recalls, tire aging and service life, and tire maintenance.
