Keeping Workers Safe During Severe Flooding
As Hurricane Patricia makes landfall, it's important to consider worker safety in dangerous conditions.
Hurricane Patricia has been identified as the largest hurricane ever recorded, and keeping people safe during this natural disaster will be of the utmost importance. OSHA and NOAA have developed a strategy for keeping workers safe during flood waters, which is available here.
According to OSHA, workers who have to respond to flooded areas face the greatest risk from floods, but all workers can help protect themselves by preparing evacuation plans and learning about the hazards associated with floods.
The flood resource microsite features two core sections: Preparedness and Response/Recovery. The preparedness page provides information on planning an evacuation, as well as preparing emergency supply kits. The response/recovery page lists hazards to avoid when flooding has occurred, both on foot and when using a vehicle.
Employers must take these tips into account when planning ways to protect workers. It is up to employers to provide a safe workplace.
