EU-OSHA Publishes Guidance on Safe Use of Nanomaterials

The recent guidance aims to help address specific risks or concerns about nanomaterials present in the workplace.

AIHA's The Synergist published a report about guidance recently released by EU-OSHA, the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, to assist health and safety practitioners, employers, and workers in safely using manufactured nanomaterials in the workplace. The guidance aims to help address specific risks or concerns about nanomaterials and ensure that the risks are adequately controlled.

For employers and health and safety professionals, the guidance document includes a section on risk assessment and risk management, which contains information on the identification of manufactured nanomaterials, exposure assessment, and control banding. The guidance for workers includes basic information on nanomaterials, current concerns about manufactured nanomaterials, how to tell whether they are using nanomaterials or nano-enabled products, routes of exposure, and commonly used risk management measures.

NIOSH also has published several guidance documents about safe use of nanomaterials, and the National Nanotechnology Initiative's EHS-related documents page is another good source of information.
