Pilz Ireland Wins IOSH Unit's Safety Company of the Year Award

Its SafeyEYE technology advances machine guarding, the unit's chairman said.

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health's Desmond-South Munster Branch recently named automation technology company Pilz Ireland as Safety Company of the Year in recognition of its SafetyEYE technology. The system uses computer technology and sensors to provide workers with 3D zonal protection near running machines. It monitors the area surrounding machinery and highlights 3D safe and danger zones. When someone enters the danger zones, SafetyEYE isolates and stops the machine until the person moves out into a safe area, when it will automatically restart.

"The development of this SafetyEYE technology," said Bob Seward, chair of the IOSH Desmond-South Munster Branch, "will make a significant difference in terms of protecting people at work while they operate around machinery danger zones. Our members were very impressed with SafetyEYE and what it can achieve in terms of accident prevention and safeguarding workers. With the introduction of this certified technology, safety can no longer be seen as a barrier to work, slowing work down or stopping work. It can be truly integrated in the work system."

John McAuliffe, Pilz Ireland managing director, said the company is honored to receive the award. "The area of safety in which we work is constantly changing, and Pilz need to be innovative in order to provide our customers with solutions that achieve safety in lean manufacturing environments. This innovation is reflected in the products we develop, including SafetyEYE, and also in the safety services we provide to multinational, national, and local manufacturing companies located here in Ireland. Collaboration with organizations such as IOSH ensures that, together, we continue to strive toward workplaces that are accident free without impacting on productivity."
