Miami Hospital Offering Third Bloodless Clinic Next Month

Bloodless medicine is an approach that includes performing minimally invasive procedures or saving a patient's own blood and using it during surgery by reinfusion.

Miami's Jackson Health System has opened its bloodless medicine clinic twice this fall, on Oct. 23 and Nov. 6, and will open it once more on Dec. 11. The clinic caters to people who are opposed to receiving blood transfusions because of religious convictions, safety concerns, or other personal reasons. Bloodless medicine is an approach that includes performing minimally invasive procedures or saving a patient's own blood and using it during surgery by reinfusion.

The clinic is in the Ryder Trauma Center at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center, which is the sole adult and pediatric Level 1 trauma center in Miami-Dade County. Dr. Mauricio Lynn, M.D., a UM/Jackson trauma surgeon and director of the Bloodless Surgery Center, heads the clinic's staff.

"At Jackson, we understand and respect the views and wishes of all of our patients," said Lynn. "We always strive to make them feel comfortable while providing them with unmatched medical care."
