Firefighter Throwdown Live Online Next Week

The two-day event during Fire-Rescue International 2014, taking place in Dallas, is a strength and endurance challenge, now in its second year.

The International Association of Fire Chiefs' Fire-Rescue International 2014 conference takes place next week and features a high-profile event that will be streamed live: the second-ever Firefighter Throwdown, taking place Aug. 15-16. Sponsors include MSA, TenCate, and Elkhart Brass.

The competition is billed as the ultimate strength and endurance competition for members of the fire service. It allows up to 100 firefighters to compete on a national level in the sport of fitness. "In accordance with the IAFC's FRI Wellness Zone initiative, which promotes the health and wellness of fire service members and their affiliates, Firefighter Throwdown is meant to be both an entertaining and inspirational event," IAFC noted in a recent news release about the competition.

It will take place in the downtown Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center starting at 10 a.m. both days. Cuts will be announced at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 15, and finals take place Aug. 16. The awards ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. that day.

"As a firefighter, instructor, and a competitor, I see firsthand the need for a physical-fitness regimen in the fire industry," said David Bowman, firefighter and athletic director of the Firefighter Throwdown. "I believe firefighter fitness is as important as the gear we wear into a fire. Preparing our body for the mental and physical demands can make us a better spouse, co-worker, and protector of our community's citizens."

Bowman has chosen four "torturous" WODs (CrossFit workouts of the day) for the competition, according to information posted on the site.
