BSEE Researcher Highlights Current Research Projects

Kristi McKinney, a research specialist in the federal agency's Oil Spill Response Division, spoke last month at the Norwegian Oil Spill Control Association’s annual seminar.

Kristi McKinney, a research specialist in the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement's Oil Spill Response Division, went to Bergen, Norway, last month to speak at the annual international seminar hosted by the Norwegian Oil Spill Control Association. McKinney highlighted current research within the Oil Spill Response Division and explained BSEE's and operators' requirements for oil spill planning and preparedness in U.S. territorial waters, according to BSEE, which reported the seminar was attended by more than 90 international researchers and responders.

McKinney also observed the 2014 Oil on Water Exercise offshore at the Frigg oil field in the North Sea, which is organized annually by the Norwegian Clean Seas Association for Operating Companies. It showcases oil spill response equipment in operation during a field release of oil. "This was an excellent opportunity to get a close look at how Norway coordinates an exercise of this magnitude and view the various technologies working together in an actual field operation," McKinney said.

The exercise included ships, equipment, and personnel from the Norwegian Coastal Administration, the Norwegian Coast Guard, oil companies, and local inter-municipal organizations.
