Simply Lite Brand Chocolate Recalled
The FDA has issued a recall of the company's dark chocolate after tests showed high levels of milk protein.
Dark chocolate from the Simply Lite brand has been recalled due to high levels of milk protein, which can put those with a milk allergy at risk, according to a an FDA news release. The agency has warned consumers that some of the company's products have milk protein, an allergen not listed on the product's label.
The FDA found the milk protection in three ounce bars of Simply Lite brand 50% Cacao Low Carb Sugar Free Dark Chocolate bearing the lot codes "Best By: 01 18 2015A" or "Best By: 01 19 2015A." Simply Natural Foods, based in Commack, N.Y., has agreed to recall the products.
According to the release, the FDA's test found more than 3,500 parts per million of milk protein in the bars, which is "equivalent to the amount found in about four teaspoons of whole milk." This is more than what would be considered a trace amount and could put those with a milk allergy or severe sensitivity at risk.
