FMCSA Closes Illegal Bus Company

The agency closes the company, doing business as Serv-A-Bus in Utah

According to a press release from FMCSA, the agency has shut down an illegal bus company that was doing business in Utah under the name of Serv-A-Bus, LLC (USDOT No. 1161287). The bus company has been declared an “imminent hazard to public safety” and was ordered to cease all inter- and intrastate passenger transportation.

As recent as last month, the bus company allegedly “continued to transport passengers, primarily students, despite a January 2013 cease operations order and revocation of its USDOT registration after receiving an unsatisfactory safety rating by federal regulators.” The illegal bus company supposedly disregarded federal safety regulations, passengers’ safety and the motoring public. In addition, the press release states that a Utah high school debate team used the bus company for transportation to Berkeley, CA and experienced a driver that drove in excess of the federal maximum hours of service limit, used unsafe driving maneuvers and secured parts of the bus (such as mirrors and bumpers) with elastic cords.

“Safety is our top priority and we will not tolerate this kind of callous disregard for public safety by any transportation provider,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx in the press release.  “These violations are especially egregious considering the company was transporting students despite being ordered to stop all operations.”
