DOT's Proposed Budget Invests $90 Billion in Safe Transportation

The proposed plan would put $90.9 billion into safe and innovative transportation programs.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's FY2015 budget request would allocate $90.9 billion to safe, efficient, and innovative transportation programs as part of DOT's four-year, $302 billion Surface Reauthorization Proposal, the agency's chief announced.

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said the funds will address the U.S. infrastructure deficit -- roads and bridges -- while improving passenger rail service and focusing on projects such as the proposed Rapid Growth Area Transit Program that will link people to jobs and educational opportunities. Funds also will go toward supporting an Interagency Infrastructure Permitting Improvement Center and to strengthening the country's freight system.

"President Obama has offered the kind of aggressive transportation budget our country needs – one that replenishes the Highway Trust Fund today while also helping ensure the country has a safe, efficient transportation system for tomorrow," Foxx said. "These funds will do everything from helping communities tackle their transportation to-do lists to improving access to ladders of opportunity. And we will do everything at the Department of Transportation to make this budget a reality, including sending a bill to Congress to support it."
