California Company Recalls Over 8 Million Pounds of Beef

The meat is recalled due to worries that it is unfit for human consumption

Rancho Feeding Corporation based in Petaluma, CA has recalled over 8 million pounds of beef, according to an article from Food Safety News. The company recalled the 8,742,700 pounds of meat because “it processed diseased and unsound animals and carried out these activities without the full benefit of federal inspection.”

On Saturday, February 8, 2014, FSIS officially announced that the meat was unfit for human consumption. Over 15 items were recalled, including beef carcasses and boxes that have the number “EST. 527” inside the USDA mark of inspection as well as a case code number ending in 3 or 4. The products, according to Food Safety News, were shipped to California, Florida, Illinois and Texas. In addition, the company recalled eight products in mid-January, 2014 that were also deemed unfit for human consumption. These products have the number “EST. 527,” have the case code “ON9O4” and were shipped to California.
