Vayama Violates DOT Fare Posting Laws

DOT has fined the ticketing site for not properly posting fare prices online.

Vayama, a ticketing agent/aggregation site, has been fined $80,000 by DOT for improperly posting fare prices online. According to a press release from DOT, the company failed to distinguish between government taxes and fees and charges imposed by the airline. In addition, the company also listed fares that were rounded down below the actual fare amount.

DOT's Aviation Enforcement Office reported that for a period of time in 2013, consumers purchasing flights would not have been aware of taxes and fees because Vayama listed them under a general "taxes and fees" label0--suggesting they were government fees when they were actually fees from the website itself that ranged from $5 to $50.
