Insurance Institute of Highway Safety Releases 2014 Car Safety Standards Report

IIHS study shows Honda, Subaru and Volvo in top for safety

A recent study done by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) gave 22 vehicles its “top safety pick plus” rating for 2014 according to a press release from IIHS. Volvo, Honda and Subaru all had cars in the top picks—Honda alone had six cars in the top spots. An additional 17 cars earned the “top safety pick” rating, meaning that 39 cars total passed the standards for high levels of crash protection and prevention.

For 2014, the organization used new criteria, according to the press release. The designation “top safety pick” means that a car has good performance in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, as well as good or acceptable performance in the small overlap front test. A car gets a “plus” rating when it passes all of those tests along with a basic rating for front crash prevention.

The institute has been giving out their ratings since 2006. Top safety pick plus winners includes the Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKZ, the Subaru EyeSight, The Toyota Prius, Honda Civic hybrid, Acura MDX, Infinity Q50, Toyota Highlander and more. The Toyota Camry, among several other cars, was awarded top safety pick.
