Senate HELP Committee Approves New Wage and Hour Chief

Dr. David Weil, professor of Markets, Public Policy, and Law and the Everett W. Lord Distinguished Faculty Scholar at Boston University School of Management, was nominated to the post by the president in September 2013.

The U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on Dec. 18 approved three presidential nominees, including Dr. David Weil to serve as head of the Labor Department's Wage and Hour Division. The others are Dr. France Cordova to serve as director of the National Science Foundation and Steven J. Anthony to serve as the management member of the Railroad Retirement Board.

President Obama had nominated Weil in September 2013. He is professor of Markets, Public Policy, and Law and the Everett W. Lord Distinguished Faculty Scholar at the Boston University School of Management, where he has worked since 1992. Weil is also senior research fellow and co-director of the Transparency Policy Project at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, who chairs the HELP Committee, said Weil "is a superb choice to head the Wage and Hour Division at the Department of Labor. Dr. Weil is one of our nation's leading experts on the enforcement of our critical workplace laws, including minimum wage and overtime regulations. In his academic career, he has studied and written extensively on the most effective ways to use limited resources to increase compliance, and has provided extensive counsel to the Department of Labor under Republican and Democratic administrations alike. He will bring unique talents to the Division, from his background as a business school professor as well as his extensive work in mediation. I am confident that he will be an exceptional leader of the Wage and Hour Division."

Cordova is a former president of Purdue University and currently chairs the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution, while Anthony is senior general counsel for Norfolk Southern Railway.
