UK Company Responsible for Employees Developing Vibration-Related Disease

Onesubsea UK Limited cited by HSE for putting workers at risk for hand arm vibration syndrome

Onesubsea UK Limited, a company based in Leeds, UK, has been fined by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for exposing workers to hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) according to a press release from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The company allegedly ignored advice and guidance that would protect workers from developing the disease between 1999 and 2010.

The employees put at risk repeatedly used hand-held power tools, and a safety investigation found that 24 workers “were identified as having symptoms of HAVS during the two-year period to March 2012.” According to the press release, several employees developed long-term damage to their nervous and circulation systems, as the disease can lead to numbness or weakness in the fingers, hands and arms.

According to HSE’s investigation, the firm failed to control risks that could lead employees to developing HAVS. The company pleaded guilty and has been ordered to pay £92,000.
