Bronx Train Derailment Prompts Safety Investigation

On Monday, the Federal Railroad Administration began a 60-day rail safety assessment on Metro-North operations

The DOT’s Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has announced the start of “Operation Deep Dive,” a 60-day program designed to assess the safety of Metro-North operations. Prompted by the derailment in the Bronx, the program will offer a comprehensive safety analysis of the commuter railroad and assess the railroad’s compliance with federal regulations.

According to a press release from DOT, technical and human factors began a comprehensive review of the rail line’s safety on Dec. 16. The assessment will look at a number of safety-critical procedures, including: track, signal and rolling rock maintenance, inspection and repair practices; protection for employees work on rail infrastructure, locomotives and rail cars; communication between mechanical and transportation departments; engineer and conductor certification and more.

Upon Operation Deep Diver’s completion, the FRA will release a report with findings and recommendations.
