Two Dead in Colorado Mine Accident

The accident, which happened at a silver mine, has left at least two dead and 20 injured

An accident at a silver mine in southwest Colorado on Sunday left two miners dead and 20 injured, according to Reuters. The cause of the accident is yet to be determined. The accident occurred at Star Mine Operations LLC’s revenue mine in Ouray, CO.

According to Reuters, authorities have ruled out an explosion or cave-in as the cause of the accident. Of the 20 miners injured, one is in critical condition.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez released the following statement following the accident:

“An apparent explosives accident claimed the lives of two Colorado gold miners today, and sent other miners to the hospital. I offer my heartfelt condolences and prayers for the families of the victims and the injured. I was moved by the efforts of the first responders within the mining community–especially the mine rescue teams that were dispatched so quickly in the wake of the accident. The Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration is committed to conducting a thorough investigation of this tragedy to determine its exact cause.”
