DOL Reaches Agreement with Verizon Regarding Training of Field Technicians

The settlement agreement resolves litigation and will ensure that there are increased safeguards and training for field technicians.

Following the death of an employee from electrocution in September 2011 in Brooklyn, Verizon received citations from OSHA totaling $147,000, according to OSHA. The violations included two repeat violations and one serious one and were issued in March. DOL and Verizon have resolved litigation and entered into an agreement that will ensure better conditions for field technicians.

As part of the agreement, Verizon will provide enhanced electrical safety training, as well as safeguards, to its field technicians in New York who install suspension strand on utility poles that carry power lines.

Verizon New York has agreed to provide an electrical safety training module for its field technician trainees at its New York schools, according to OSHA. In addition, the company will provide in-service training to current technicians who install suspension strands.
