National Biodefense Science Board Meeting Oct. 31

The posted agenda for the public meeting indicates it will include the announcement of a new federal advisory committee.

HHS announced that the National Biodefense Science Board will hold a public meeting via teleconference and webinar on Oct. 31. The meeting's agenda indicates Dr. Nicole Lurie, M.D., MSPH, assistant secretary for Preparedness and Response and a rear admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service, will announce a new federal advisory committee and a new task for the board, which is charged with providing expert advice and guidance to HHS about use of chemical, biological, nuclear, and radiological agents, whether naturally occurring, accidental, or deliberate, and on matters related to public health emergency preparedness and response

The meeting will be dedicated to the board's deliberation and vote on findings from the NBSB's Situational Awareness Working Group and National Health Security Working Group.

The board has a number of working groups, including an anthrax vaccine group, a disaster medicine group, a medical countermeasures research and development group, an all-hazards science response group, a pandemic influenza group, and a personal preparedness and community resilience group.

A progress update on the Situational Awareness Working Group's activities is scheduled to be presented at this meeting by Chair Sarah Park, M.D., FAAP, and Co-chair Manohar Furtado, Ph.D., according to the agenda.
