Employee Engagement and Motivation Heightened with Workplace Flexibility

A new study shows that employees who are given a more flexible work schedule may be happier and more hardworking than their counterparts

According to an article from Bloomberg BNA, workplace flexibility programs such as telecommuting, flexible hours and flexible start and end times have a positive effect on employees’ motivation, engagement and satisfaction. The article bases it information on a recently released survey from WorldatWork.

Despite the plethora of benefits resulting from a flexible work culture, fewer organizations offer workplace flexibility now than they did in 2010. In addition, big employers such as Yahoo, Best Buy and HP have reported that they plan to “rein in” their telework programs.

The study cited by Bloomberg BNA showed various interesting facts about workplace flexibility. For one, 85% of employers who have a flexible culture in their office reported that the flexibility has had a positive effect on engagement. 84% reported a positive impact on motivation and 92% reported a positive impact on employee satisfaction.

Other results of the survey showed that a flexible work environment can reduce employee turnover. The survey also showed that salaried employees have the greatest flexibility and two-thirds of organizations say that career progression is not inhibited by an employee’s use of flexibility. Furthermore, the study reported that 88% of organizations offer telework, while 80% offer flexible hours and part-time schedules.
