Global Earthquake Drill a Success

Millions participated in the "Great ShakeOut," a worldwide earthquake drill. Participants included nonprofits, government agencies, and workers.

More than 18 million people worldwide participated in this year's big earthquake drill, "The Great ShakeOut," on Oct. 17 at 10:17 a.m., according to AIHA. In addition to families and schools, government agencies, nonprofits, and many workers participated in the event, which is held on the third Thursday of October each year.

The drill involves three steps: drop, cover and hold on. Participants of the 2013 drill came from the United States, Canada, Japan, Italy, and Guam.

According to ABC News, California had a bevy of participants, around 9.5 million. The state had participants from all major cities, including San Diego, which had 832,000 alone. The article suggests that workers and residents in California should always make sure their water heaters and heavy equipment are secured. People should also prepare to be self-sufficient for about 72 hours following an earthquake.
