BART Workers on Strike in San Francisco

After a week of negotiations, the public transportation workers have decided to go on strike, affecting up to 400,000 travelers

Due to ongoing trouble for the last several months, BART workers spent the last week negotiating with Bay Area Rapid Transit management. Due to an inability to reach a satisfactory negotiation, BART workers have gone on strike, according to the LA Times.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit management, the Service Employees International Union Local 1021 and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1555 negotiated until late on Thursday. Demands that were not adequately met include enhanced bus and ferry service and expanded carpool hours. Some issues were negotiated on, however, such as health benefits and pension contributions.

According to the LA Times, the strike will displace around 400,000 daily commuters. Aside from the inconvenience this causes, the strike could have deleterious economic effects as well. The Bay Area Council reported that a 4.5-day BART strike in July cost $73 million per day.
