Accident at Stadium Project Kills Delivery Driver

The individual was struck by a load of rebar as it was being unloaded from his truck, according to the San Jose Mercury News' report.

A falling load is the apparent cause of death of the driver of a truck delivering rebar Oct. 14 to the construction site for the $1.2 billion Levi’s® Stadium, the new home for the San Francisco 49ers football team that is being built in Santa Clara, Calif. The driver was struck at 6:30 a.m. while unloading at the site, and EMS transported him to a hospital.

Turner/Devcon, the general contractor, posted a statement saying the driver died from his injuries. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this very difficult time. The incident is under investigation by the Santa Clara Police and Fire Departments and we have notified Cal OSHA. We are in the process of shutting down the jobsite for today," the company’s statement said.

This is the second fatality at the site during the stadium project, San Jose Mercury News reporters Robert Salonga and Mike Gomez reported. Their online report said an elevator mechanic, Donald White, 63, died June 11 after being struck by a counterweight while he was standing on a ladder at the bottom of an elevator shaft.
