IAEA's Nuclear Law Institute Begins

From Sept. 29 to Oct. 11, 2013, institute participants discuss nuclear safety, security safeguards, and more.

The International Atomic Energy Agency's 2013 Nuclear Law Institute commenced on Sept. 29, 2013 and runs until Oct. 11, 2013, according to a news release from IAEA's website. The event takes place in Baden, Austria.

The annual institute, run in coordination with the Department of Technical Cooperation, is a two-week forum aimed at strengthening the capacities of Member States in nuclear law. The aspects of nuclear law that are discussed are nuclear safety, security, safeguards, and civil liability.

At the institute, participants are given instruction and training for how to draft, amend, and review nuclear legislation. Attendees from Member States include legal experts, regulators employed by the government, and national agencies' representatives.

As of February 2013, IAEA has 159 participating states, with the most recent additions being the Bahamas, Brunei Darussalam, and Swaziland in 2013, as well as Dominica, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, San Marino, Togo, and Trinidad and Tobago in 2012.
