OSHA Cites Georgia Power Co. with $119,000 in violations

Plant Bowen receives 17 violations after an explosion

After a generator explosion at Plant Bowen of the Georgia Power Co. in April 2013, an investigation led by OSHA has issued the company with 17 serious safety violations, according to a press release. The explosion occurred during a maintenance shutdown. Nobody was injured or killed at the plant, which is located in Cartersville, GA.

The total proposed fines add up to $119,000, and include violations such as failure to comply with tagout procedures for power generation plants, failure to develop and use procedures to control potentially hazardous energy, failure to ensure that the worker in charge conducted a safety briefing before each job, failure to use established shutdown procedures and more.

Georgia Power Co. is a division of The Southern Company, and the Plant Bowen facility has around 300 employees.
