NSC Welcomes New Chairman and DuPont's CEO

Jeff Woodbury of ExxonMobil is now board chairman for the safety council and DuPont CEO Ellen Kullman accepted the 2013 Campbell Award during the annual conference

CHICAGO - Outgoing National Safety Council board Chairman Kent McElhattan handed the honorary gavel to his successor, ExxonMobil's Jeff Woodbury, on Sept. 30, with McElhattan thanking all of NSC's employees and board members for their hard work during his tenure. He also thanked NSC President and CEO Janet Froetscher "for igniting new life and purpose into this organization.... The change in attitude is palpable," McElhattan added. "NSC's performance has blossomed under your leadership in every area, Janet, and I've loved every minute of working with you," he said.

Woodbury spoke briefly before honoring the Distinguished Service to Safety Award winners and also NSC's 2013 Rising Stars of Safety. The DSSA winners are Teresa Cole, CSP, CHMM, senior region safety manager of First Student; David Lee Jewell, CSP, safety and health manager for Assisted Living Concepts; Carl Jorgensen, material handler at Alcoa Davenport Works and accident investigator at United Steelworkers Local 105; and George Kennedy, CSP, vice president of safety for the National Utility Contractors Association.

Woodbury also announced DuPont had won the 2013 Campbell Award, and he congratulated DuPont CEO Ellen Kullman for the achievement, saying the company won the award "by achieving near-perfect scores in almost all of its categories."

Kullman, who started the DuPont unit that has become DuPont Sustainable Solutions about 15 years ago, told the audience, "We remain committed to zero [incidents and injuries], and we're always there and ready to help."
