New ASSE Institute Works to Improve Risk Assessment

The Risk Assessment Institute will encourage organizations to be better equipped to assess risk.

The American Society of Safety Engineers announced its Risk Assessment Institute at Safety 2013 in Las Vegas. This institute will encourage better risk management for the future.

According to ASSE president-elect Kathy A. Seabrook, CSP, the rate of serious and fatal injuries indicates a need for change.

"Recent injury and illness trends within companies and their global supply chains indicate that overall incident rate improvement has slowed and rates of fatal and serious injuries have remained steady for a number of years," Seabrook said. "Clearly, a different approach is required if further improvements are to be made."

Seabrook elaborated on the four goals of the Risk Assessment Institute: educate executives, improve risk-related training, provide a platform for the industry to weigh in on new policies and solutions, and act as a clearinghouse for risk-related information and tools.

“Risk assessment is a fundamental discipline for safety professionals. There’s still too much reliance on traditional approaches to improving safety, health, and environmental performance, which is focused primarily on injury rate reduction,” Seabrook said in a press conference Wednesday.

This institute, which will operate out of ASSE headquarters in Chicago, will open July 1 and will be led by current ASSE president Rick Pollock, CSP. It will be a forum for information, making tools like webinars available to those in the industry.
