Texas Spring Break Crackdown Totaled 1,077 DWI Arrests

The Department of Public Safety reported 226 of them directly resulted from increased patrols during the March 8–17 period.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers made 1,077 DWI arrests during a spring break special enforcement crackdown March 8-17, including 226 arrests that directly resulted from increased patrols during that period, the department announced April 19. The added patrol hours was paid for by a Texas Department of Transportation grant.

"With Texas' status as a popular spring break destination, DPS is always concerned about drinking and driving during that time," DPS Director Steven McCraw said. "These DWI patrols, without a doubt, help save lives, and we are grateful for the troopers who work every day to keep our roads safe."

The TxDOT grant allowed troopers to focus DWI patrols in high-risk locations when alcohol-related crashes are most frequent.

DPS enforcement also resulted in more than 11,400 speeding citations, 1,600 seat belt/child safety seat tickets and 12,000 other citations, in additional to 552 fugitive arrests and 463 felony arrests during the time period.
