DOE Appoints Bill Drummond Administrator of Bonneville Power

Bill Drummond, the new Administrator of the BPA, has 30 years of experience in the energy industry and is the current deputy administrator of the agency.

The Department of Energy has appointed Bill Drummond as the new Adminstrator for the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). The BPA is one of the four non-profit Power Marketing Administrations (PMAs) that the DOE oversees.

Drummond, the current BPA deputy administrator with 30 years of experience in the energy industry, will lead the BA in marketing carbon-free power generated by hydroelectric dams. The agency also distributes wind and nuclear energy to much of the Pacific Northwest.

The DOE takes this step in an effort to promote the use of sustainable energy throughout the country.

“The leadership of BPA is critically important because America’s continued global competiveness in the 21st century will be significantly affected by whether we can efficiently produce and distribute electricity to businesses and consumers, seamlessly integrating new technologies and new sources of power,” said Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, in a statement on the DOE website. “I look forward to working with Bill Drummond to help lead BPA’s transition to a more flexible, resilient, and reliable electric grid and establish much greater coordination among system operators in partnership with its customers.”

Drummond began his career at the BPA in October 2011. Prior to that, he was the manager of Western Montana Electric Generating and Transmission Cooperative in Missoula, Montana, for 17 years.
