12,000 Votes Cast in 2010 IBEW Photo Contest

The grand prize went to a shot of a St. Joseph, Mo. member of Local 545 making a difficult weld at a Conoco refinery.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, IBEW, announced the winners of its 14th annual photo contest on Jan. 20 and posted the winning and honorable mention photos on its website. This 2010 contest featured 15 finalists and was the third time Internet voting was possible; the finalist photos garnered 12,000 votes in all.

The 2010 grand prize went to a St. Joseph, Mo. member's shot of a member of Local 177 making a difficult weld at a Conoco refinery in Alton, Ill. A shot of power lines on an ice-cold morning in Virginia took second place, and two members of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Local 320 claimed third place for a photo they staged where one appeared to be trying to make a repair on a submerged pole in a Pennsylvania lake. The two honorable mentions are shots of a member walking down one of the suspension cables of the Golden Gate Bridge and working on a platform suspended over the side of a bridge that connects Ogdensburg, N.Y., to Prescott, Ontario, Canada, according to the site.

Grand prize winner Blain Logan won $200. Finalist photos were featured on the site during December and January.
