VPPPA Executive Director Receives ISEA Service Award

R. Davis Layne, who worked more than 30 years for OSHA before becoming executive director of the Voluntary Protection Program Participants’ Association, Inc., received the Robert B. Hurley Distinguished Service Award.

The International Safety Equipment Association presented the 2010 Robert B. Hurley Distinguished Service Award on Monday to R. Davis Layne, executive director of the Voluntary Protection Program Participants’ Association, Inc. Layne was an OSHA senior administrator before joining VPPPA in January 2005.

The award was given during ISEA's Fall Meeting in Arlington, Va. It recognizes an individual who has dedicated his or her professional life to workers' safety and health.

"Worker safety has been Davis' lifelong calling," ISEA President Dan Shipp said. "It would be impossible to calculate the number of worker lives saved or injuries that have been prevented through his efforts, which date back even before his OSHA career when he was involved in safety with the U.S. Army Material Command Field Service Agency. But we know the lives saved and injuries prevented must number in the thousands."

"Over my safety and health career I have seen the important role the personal protective equipment industry has played in workplace safety and health," Layne said. "Time after time, the PPE industry is the first to respond to emerging worker hazards and national threats quickly and efficiently. I am truly honored to be the 2010 recipient of the Robert B. Hurley Distinguished Service Award."

VPPPA, based in Falls Church, Va., is open to organizations that participate in or are applying to VPP programs of OSHA, the U.S. Department of Energy, and other government agencies that are developing or implementing cooperative recognition programs.
