New York City Spotlighting Construction Safety

OSHA is joining with the New York City Department of Buildings and other partners to provide safety training and heighten awareness of construction safeguards and hazards during New York City's Construction Safety Week, which began Monday and continues through Friday. Seminars and other events are being held at various locations throughout the city in support of the event. All are free of charge and open to the public.

Training on fall protection and the proper use of safety harnesses was the first focus of the Week, with the directors of OSHA's Manhattan and Tarrytown area offices and Department of Buildings officials provide training in English and Spanish Monday night in Brooklyn. The first 75 workers to arrive received a free safety harness. The training continues today in two separate events--"How to Identify and Hire a Licensed Contractor," presented by the Buildings Department and the Department of Consumer Affairs from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Wollman Lounge at 51 Astor Place (at East 8th Street), and "Homeowners' Night: Resolving ECB Violations & Illegal Conversions," presented by Buildings Department Borough experts at five different locations (in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island) from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. For location addresses and other details, go to www.nyc.gov/html/dob/html/news/constr_safety_week_2009_sch.shtml.
